ROBLOX is a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) user-generated virtual playground and workshop designed for children aged serven and over. Players can create virtual worlds with blocks of various shapes, sizes, and materials. Lua, a scripting language, allows players to gain more control of their created worlds. ROBLOX is owned by David Baszucki.
Early development and release (1990s-2005)
Development on ROBLOX supposedly began in the late 1990s. The ROBLOX website was launched in 2005 and officially released in 2006.
Further improvements and changes (2006-2009)
After the release of ROBLOX, "Roblox Points" were introduced, a way for players to compete for the leaderboard. This feature was replaced in 2007 with currencies, including "Tickets" and "Robux".
Membership was also added by late 2007. Clothing was another option for users, allowing them to wear hats and t-shirts (known as shirts before April 2008).
New graphics such as particles and effects were added in 2008. In April 2008, shirts and pants were introduced. This update made one of the largest changes in the atmosphere.
In 2009, new studs, faces, heads, and materials were added. Two new memberships were added, Turbo Builders Club in June, and Outrageous Builders Club in October.
Contemporary years (2010-present)
2010, packages were released, which was an improvement of the first ROBLOX character. In 2012, terrain was released, a feature similar to Minecraft. ROBLOX also became compatible with the iPad and iPhone in the same year.
In 2013, physics improved, and dynamic lightning was installed. That same year, Erik Cassel died.
The CSG modeler, which is the ability to create custom "meshes" and reduce lag will be released in 2014.
ROBLOX also began running real-life conventions. The first two events took place in California in 2010 and 2011. In 2013, ROBLOX held three conventions in Illinois, New York, and England. In 2014, ROBLOX ran Maker Faires all across the United States.
ROBLOX's community is also very large. Since 2005, only a few users joined. In 2006, thousands of accounts were created and its player-base increased rapidly. By 2007, nearly 100,000 users were registered and one million total accounts created in September 2008. More than five million users were created in 2009 and up to ten million existed in 2010. As of today, more than 50 million accounts. Each day, there are over 100,000 consecutive users.
The community is very diverse, with many taking part in numerous, roleplay and interest communities. These include film-making commmunities, such as ROBLOXiwood.
